What are Misdemeanors and Gross Misdemeanors?

Misdemeanors and Gross Misdemeanors are generally considered “lesser crimes,” and are usually handled in Court of Limited Jurisdiction.

These courts are better known as “district court” or “municipal court” as opposed to Superior Court, where felonies are handled. Gross misdemeanors are crimes that are punishable by a maximum of a year (365 days) in jail and a five thousand dollar ($5000) fine. Examples include: Driving Under the Influence (DUI), Reckless Driving, Assault, Theft and Hit and Run (attended and unattended).
